  • 2007 Cummins with 5.9

I was getting ready to possibly buy a 2007 Cummins, auto 4x4 with 65,000 miles on it. It's hard to find a clean Dodge! I found one. This one looks to have been driven around town, as the underside has no mud clods and the engine bay is pretty clean. My only draw back is, it has a goose neck hitch....all that I have looked at do. Looking at the bed, it has some regular scratches, but the tailgate and sides of truck are clean. Most of the trucks I come across have torn up tailgates and scratches all along the bed.

I'm worried about the trans. The heaviest thing I will pull is a 30-33' enclosed trailer. I read so many issues with the trans, that has me double thinking if I should buy it. When I test drove it, the trans seemed to shift ok. I'm going to drive it one more time to make sure.

Thoughts about the 5.9's with autos? Are they as bad as the internet makes them out to be?

    Thanks

I have a 2005 with the 48RE, it has 90K miles on it. I have not had any problems but I have kept the fluid changed and I don't beat on it or haul anything heavy. All I do is drive the truck to work for the most part.

No problems typically with the 48RE until you put a programmer on it. At least that's been my personal experience. You will have to replace the ball joints at some point. Otherwise I love my 5.9 and I would stay clear of the early year 6.7's if you're going to go that route.

            Well, shit!

            What changed with the 6.7's?

For the most part, this truck is going to sit, so I don;t want to get much above 30k. I have found some clean 08-09. Anything newer is going to be more than I want to spend.

the 6.7's got a bigger/better engine, better injectors (fewer failures), a better/stronger 6sp automatic transmission that actually tows well, and a VGT turbo with integral exhaust brake.

the only problems you have with a 6.7 are from the smog equipment.

a simple DPF delete and a programmer gets rid of all those problems and you end up with a far more capable truck than a 5.9 truck

just keep the added power mild, and it'll do great

While i have a few of you diesels guys.....

How are the Air Dog fuel filter systems? I wanted to do a few mods and figured this would help with longeviity?

Besides DPF delete, do the air intakes help fuel mileage? Any other mods that help?

                    Thanks

I don't buy into the AirDog/Fass BS. an intake isn't really doing to do anything for mileage. a good drop-in replacement filter will do just as much.

an exhaust system and a delete tune are the best bang for the buck... run about a 60-75hp tune, and just enjoy the thing
