  • Someone talk me out of this...

So this Merkur showed up in Bryan just north of me. I think it's about 750 bucks too high but you 2.3T guys give me a reason NOT to try and bid on this...

Car is originally from Plano area and had less than 2k miles put on it for about 6 years...looks to have a few mods. Ain't perfect but might make a neat daily beater and occasional track car.

What ya'll think? Wife has been looking for one for lemons for 4 years but this one is a little nice for that.

    Talk me out of this....

        They didn't come with T5's...?

I was thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500 but the guy who has it seems to think there are plenty of people interested at the 3500 price. I spoke with a buddy who had one when he was younger and he said they are hard to find parts for if it's something other than the engine/trans.

I want a turbo car again in a bad way....guess I need to go drive the wife's Grand National more! LOL!

This car was sold to the seller a few months ago for less then 2k. The seller is a car dealer that is just trying to flip the car. It is also worth what he paid for it and not what he is asking for it now. I have a 1 owner 88 XR from the pacific NW that had 15k miles on it when I bought it 7 years ago; I paid what this clown is asking for his and mine came with so many extra parts that I had to ship them home because they would not fit in the car.

Unless you REALLY like XRs DO NOT buy one. I constantly have to shop Ebay UK for odd ball parts for it.

The manual trans Merkurs came with T9 (AKA The Hummer) 5 speeds. I have a few new ones if you are interested.

Here is where they thought they could get 5k for it.

Give it a month or 2 and you will be able to pick it up for $2000.

Thats badass, black and 5spd. Way too high though. I used to drive a red/auto (didnt like either, lol) xr4ti and I loved the thing.

Considering there were a little over 40k Merkurs made in the 80's parts might be hard to come by now. But as clean as it is you won't have that problem.

Way too nice for Lemons, would make a cool daily though. And considering the rarity of actual decent condition Merkur's, I don't think that price is too high at all.

there was one in Austin or SA a while back that was clean as a pin and really well modded. I think it went for $4500 or so

Matt - If you are really itching for a turbo it seems an SVO would be a better option. Atleast in terms of parts and maintenance. Hope your doing well down in College Station.

THAT is the info I was looking for! LOL! gotta love this site!!!

My want for a turbo car is mostly just a want. Like I said, the wife has a great GN sitting in the garage, I just need to finish a few little driveline issues to make it reliable to drive. It's fun but only makes about 400rw...I think. We need to get it on a dyno eventually after all the work I did this year on it.

I just have too many projects. We have 3 race cars, two trailers, the GN and two trucks. The trailers need tires, I'd like to get rid of my truck and into a Vette or M3, get rid of one trailer and possibly sell the GN as we never drive it. Then I want to REALLY up the power in the Mustang Race car to somewhere North of 500rwhp....but it will require several updates to the driveline to handle that power...not to mention brakes and additional cage/safety items for dealing with the extra speed. Another part of me would like to sell the camaro and the mustang and build something crazy like a GTA tube frame car or even some sort of home brew "prototype" with a corvette driveline and 500hp.

Throw all these "projects" in with all the other little hobbies we have, running our school and traveling for work 3 and 4 days a week and I have a dilemma.

                            I really need to simplify!!!
