  • Are shorty headers even worth it?

Hi all. 94 GT. Are aftermarket shorty headers even worth having? I mean the car already came with those. Wouldn't it be better to just upgrade to a set of longtubes? I noticed that some places sell shorty headers for my car that are damn expensive. Was wondering if its even worth it. Doesn't seem like you're going to gain much power by going from shorty headders, to a little bit better shorty headers. I mean maybe... you can get like bigger tubing or something? At least that would make sense. But most of the ones I've seen are the same size as stock.

They're worth it as a part of your total exhaust package. Just throwing on some shorties may not make a lot of difference, but with a good H-pipe and mufflers, they do make a difference.

Hmm ok. So now on to my next question I guess. How much should I pay for a used catback? By which I mean, just the mufflers, tips, and the pipe that goes back to the H-pipe. I see no reason to buy that stuff brand new.

You see them here on the board pretty cheap. My '95 has shorties, a Bassani catted H pipe and 40 series Flows. You could piece it together pretty cheap by buying the mufflers and tips off the board.

That doesn't seem to be true with LS motors. I got good gains on my Z06 just going to longtubes.

They are worth anywhere from 8-10 horsepower on a totally stock car just because the stock headers neck down so much right after the header flange.

In short, No. Get an o/r H and be done with it. It might even help your pinging issue if switching to premium gas doesn't help.

and to answer your question, yes longtubes would be better.

As mentioned they make a small difference. I would suggest buying long tubes with the matching mid pipe. You will gain a little more bottom end and in the long run they will pay off if you end up doing heads nitrous etc..

Also FYI fox body stuff will work. You will just have to delete your egr.

better bottom end with long tubes? its the opposite, you loose bottom end and gain top end with lt's because they are better at scavenging and reduce back pressure compared to shorties.
