  • Roller / Non-roller motor cam question

So it turns out the motor I picked up is a 72'.
So that makes it a non-roller motor.
Still trying to find out if it's a Mexican Block or not.

I have a Trick Flow Stage 1 cam I picked up off here. Turns out it isn't just a swap for me.

    Dammit!

Which would be Better performance wise: getting parts to make make cam work, or getting a new cam that will slide right in.

It's a stock low compression motor with Torque II intake, 600cfm Holly, and will see a 125-150 shot running through a C4.

You can use that cam with a set of link-bar roller lifters.

Your other option is to use 5.0 style lifter and spider tray with a small base circle cam.

If you like the Stage one, go buy a set of lifters and you're good to go.

IIRC, if you do that you have to machine the block on top of the of the lifter bores flat so that the little guides will lay flat. Not to mention the lack of threaded holes for the spider.

You will have to buy hydraulic ones though. They are a little more expensive.

BTW , is this a 302 or 351 ? If 302 the crank on that motor will be balanced to 28oz unlike the later HO motors . Just something to keep in mind with balancer and flywheel opptions .

and use a reduced base circle cam as mentioned.

You won't notice enough of a performance gain to buy 400 dollar lifters. Get a new cam. Post pic of the block. Mexican blocks are noticably different. They have bigger main caps for one. Also pay attention to the firing order on the cam you buy. Cams that are non ho have a different firing order.

Thanks for all the help folks!!

                      It's a 302. I will see if I can get a pic posted.

Guess it's a good thing I got the motor and trans for $250!!!
Money save there will apparently be spent elsewhere.

                        Here are a couple pics.
I suck at loading off my new camera so please don't shoot me if they are too small to see.

Thanks again for the help and insight.

Looks like it's time to start gathering more parts for this thing.
Good thing my birthday and Christmas are right around the corner!
