  • 1996 no power to fuel pump

truck died on me suddenly, it starts up on starting fluid. so thinking that I burned the pump out running out of gas the day before. I change the pump. well no power to the fuel pump, the relay up front "clicks" when you turn the key, and yes I did check the ground wire since thats what got me before.
even if the relay clicks is it still good? all fuses are good? double checked all connections, even tried on an old pump I had around with no luck.
    Im thinking ecm or relay?

what's the vehicle, most likely if the fuel pump relay clicks then the ecm is trying to do it's job. If it's a ford then check the inertia switch in the passenger kick panel. see if you have power on both sides of the switch connector when cranking. It gets it's power from the relay. If you have no power there then go back to the relay and switch it with another one, like a\c or something that's not needed to crank or start the vehicle. Also check for power where the relay plugs in, it should be on the 30 pin. hope this is helpful.

oh man! sorry I didnt even put what vehicle. 1996 chevy 1500 4.3, I did trace the power back to the connectors where someone already spiced in another plug in the assembly. I just reconnected and worked. If I wasnt in such a hurry, I would have soldered and maybe heat shrinked but we are down a vehicle so Ill have to do that another day. also had to replace the orings on the fuel compression fittings. all we could find at oreilly's were ac orings.

ok, so no inertia switch on those, goes straight from the pump to the relay, try swapping the horn relay or ac relay in for the fuel pump
