The oil level will stay the same with the new pan. You have added volume by getting a bigger pan.

Your dipstick tube goes into the block.

If you did cut the tube down you would lowering the oil level, thus running a risk of starving the engine of oil.

Maybe this illustration will help.. Although the depth of the pan increases, the measurment on the dip stick identifies where the oil is relative to the top of the pan. You can make the pan as big as you want but the oil level to the top of the pan should remain constant. If you shorten the tube your stick will go further down in the pan and cause you to run with low oil (relative to the top of the pan).

Had to add a comma after "increases".

The oil level is supposed to be at a certain point in relation to the crankshaft, not from the bottom of the oil pan.

5qts in the stock pan and 7qts in a deep pan should register at the same point on the same dipstick, right?

As 46Tbird pointed out some time ago, and Chili and Muffrazr expanded upon, the oil level must be measured relative to the block (and crankshaft).

You guys are missing out on an important point, but in this case it appears to be irrelevant to the OP's question (he didnt' clarifiy what pan/block he had).

MOST "good" aftermarket pans have the dipstick tube IN the pan. Some don't have it at all.. and in my case, I had to weld on a 650$ Steff's pan becuase my block doesn't have the provision for the dipstick! GRRR!

So, in those cases - Moroso makes a dipstick that has a nut/ferrule arrangement that screws into the pan itself, and it's cut to fit.

..carry on, useless info this time.

                  If it helps I have a Moroso 7qt pan and a 90 302 block.

Does it have the bung in the side of the pan as well as the block?

Not that it really matters, you can do it either way really.
