I had a noisy lifter so I've pulled the 302 down and swapped them, since I was in the motor I stuck a set of aluminum heads on it with stud mount rockers and here is where I'm lost. I did soak the lifters overnight but not sure how to set the rockers and if the pushrods are long enough. Motor is a stock 302 with an Ecam, pro comp heads, and 1.6 roller rockers. Help

1)Take a couple of your old lifters and make a few solid lifters out of them.
2)Buy a couple of adjustable push rods
3)Find the length you need
a. install your solid checker lifter you've made in the lifter bore on cyl1
b.make sure you're on the base circle of the camshaft..now install the adj. pushrod, start at stock length
c. take a black marker and completely black out the valve tip so you can see where/how the rocker moves.
d. install the rocker and set to zero lash. move the pushrod up and down with your fingers.. once there's no play stop your at zero lash.
e. roll the motor over through a few cycles
f. remove rocker and check pattern. in a perfect world you want the most narrow line in the center of the valve tip. However, with all the different manufactures of parts and the not so exact tolerances just aim for the thinnest line whereever that may end up.. ie. thinner line closer to exhaust or intake is better than fat line in the center. You want to make sure the rocker is vertical over the valve which will give you the thinnest line across the tip. Experiment and find what's best for your motor. I do this check on cylinders 1,4,5, and 8 on my ford motors. once happy measure your adj. pushrod and order what you need.
HINT - Be sure and know how the manufacturer of the pushrod your ordering measures the length.
HOW TO ADJUST VALVE LASH
1) Follow the firing order or however you want to do it. Make sure each valve you adjust is on the base circle of the cam. As above move the pushrod up and down until it just snugs up. You've found zero lash. Now turn an additional 1/2-1 turn for preload and lock it down.
2) Repeat on all valves once again making sure you're on the base circle of the cam on each valve your setting.

If they are stud mount rockers then they should be using guide plates, you need new pushrods, make a couple of solid lifters then check your sweep on the valve tip, don't run it with the stock pushrods!Interested in being a VIP member and donating to the site?
