  • Brembo blanks out of spec after 1 set of pads?

Maybe this is the norm, but I typically expect to be able to turn rotors at least one time. Bought these Brembo blanks for my daily about 2 years ago, installed with them with some good quality pads. Brake pad indicator came on a few days ago (which indicates pads are at 5/64"). Pulled the rotors and took them to O'Reilly to be turned and they are just over spec before turning them and they won't turn them since they'll probably be under after they get resurfaced.

These are vented 11.25" rotors btw.

From what I have experienced most new rotors are being manufactured at or close to their minimum. And since Brembo started making their rotors in Mexico, they haven't been the same.

As for O'Reilly's, they will always tell you they are too thin. If they are not, they will crank down on their mic until they put a dent in them.

Take them to Pep Boys. They are cheaper anyway.

Ya, kinda lost it for a minute at O'Reilly last night over this (and another issue). Left the rotors on Sunday and the guy said since they are close he'd turn them and if they come out under spec that he wouldn't charge me but that he also wouldn't be responsible for any problems I might have. Get there and a different guy is like, ya, those are under spec so we can't do them. Wouldn't have been an issue but I was planning on them being done when I got there (regardless of the minimum thickness), so then I had to go home and order new rotors which keeps the daily on jack stands for another 2-3 days.

As shitty as it is, that makes perfect sense, because they will sell more rotors that way.

If it weren't for the unsprung weight issue, I'd say make 'em an extra quarter inch thick on both sides, but then people would rarely need another set.

From what I've heard, doesn't BMW say you need to replace the rotors on their cars every time you change pads? Maybe it's due to BMW's specs and not Brembo's fault?

Ive never had any car that needed rotors every time pads were due.

ya, i've heard that too, but a lot of those "guidelines" are pretty excessive. you may be on to something though.

                Are they warped?

no, but there is a pad grove from hell. i had to compress the pad quite a bit to get them over the rotor lip.

Damn. You need to ick better pads sinse you are having to buy rotors every time. Whatever you are using is eating rotors.

I used premium Akebono ceramic pads last time. This time I am going with Raybestos Professional Grade semi-metallic.

the use of highly advanced ceramic brake pad technology allows akebono’s “euro” pad line to provide excellent stopping power while extending rotor life and virtually eliminating brake dust.
                        lmao!

I'm running brembo slotted rotors and Hawk HT10 pads on my e36. So far so good, I'm going to pull the wheels this weekend to check runout now, lol.

I've run 3 sets of race compound pads on regular replacement rotors. The composition of the pad makes a HUGE difference in rotor life.

Not doubting that, just laughing about those pads increasing rotor life when the ate my rotors up like butter.
