  • Out of nowhere the clutch pedal in 1997 Cobra is VERY firm.

Sarah took the Cobra to work yesterday (first time it has moved in about a month) and she complained about the clutch being excessively firm. I hoped in after work and sure enough it is very firm. Could be my imagination but it seems to get firmer as it gets further depressed.

If it were a stretched cable I'd assume it would have engagement issues and would probably be less firm then too firm.

If the cable is simply dry is there a way to lube it or should I just replace?

The only other things I could think of are possibly a bent clutch fork or the pressure plate has a problem?

This is a OEM Ford replacement clutch BTW.

It is probably just the cable coming apart. I would just install a new OEM cable.

It could be the cable or it could be the throw out bearing seizing up on the throw out bearing guide tube of the transmission.

Disconnect the cable from the fork. Take a pry bar and try to push the fork and throw out bearing foward and backwards. If it slides smoothly, its more than likely the cable. If doesn't, you will need to drop the trans, clean the guide tube, apply a little grease to it and a new throw out bearing. If the bearing seizes up completely on it, it will break the guide tube and they are no longer available through Tremec.

My experience with this issue has always been the cable

If you arent hearing any tb noise, i would bet the cable has begun to drag.

Prob the cable corroding inside the sleeve.

Pull the cable off and see if it's stuck.

Had a similar thing happen to me. Cable snapped the next day.

A bad ground cable can cause this. The clutch cable starts to get current running through it and it melts the insides.

seems like a good upgrade if you have to run a heavy duty clutch
