  • '04 F150 idle issue

has the 4.2L V6 in it. erratic idle with a/c on and stalls at a stop ONLY with the a/c on. just got back from AutoZone, they pulled the codes for me. only one that came up is a P0506. can anyone decipher that for me? the kid behind the counter barely knew his own name much less work the computer in front of him.

    TIA

try cleaning the throttle body or iac

P0506 - Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected
Vehicles with electronic throttle control (ETC) This DTC is set when the powertrain control module (PCM) detects an engine idle speed that is less than the desired RPM. Air intake restriction
    Exhaust restriction
    Engine mechanical fault.
    Sludged throttle body
    Damaged electronic throttle body (ETB)
    Damaged PCM
This DTC may be accompanied by other DTCs. Diagnose other DTCs first. If other DTCs are not present inspect the intake air system for air restrictions and damage. If no concerns are present, clear the DTC and retest

P0506 - Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected
All others This DTC is set when the PCM detects an engine idle speed that is less than the desired RPM. IAC circuit open
    Air inlet is plugged
    Damaged or incorrect IAC valve
    IAC valve stuck closed
    VPWR to IAC solenoid open
    IAC circuit shorted to PWR
    Damaged PCM
Disconnect the IAC valve and look for no change in engine RPM as an indication of a stuck or damaged valve.

well, now there is question whether it has an IAC or not. one parts store said yes and another said no. I'm not familiar with this truck at all so I wouldn't even know what it looks like.

4.2 should have an iac. It right on top of the throttle body

ok fellas, finally got around to making time for it. I removed TB and gave it a thorough cleaning. will taking the negative cable off the batt. clear the code and turn off the CEL?

ok, so it DOESN'T have an IAC.

I pulled it off earlier and I just got back from a 45min drive. not CEL and no stalling. hmm, maybe all it needed was a good cleaning.
