  • 04' f150 4.6 interchange in 99+ mustang

i am in the process of rebuilding my mustang's 4.6 and it's going to be a while before i have the forged motor ready.

i came across a good deal on an 04' f150 4.6 with under 60k and was thinking about just using the mustangs cams, intake, and accessories to get the mustang running so at least i can have some fun while i build the other motor. will that engine work?

Musclestang89 has a truck engine in his car. Might pm him.

Should work, just swap the heads, and intake and use your acc. Might not even need to swap the heads.

awesome! I didn't want to swap the heads because my current heads have a bad valve seal.

looks like in some applications of the f150 the 2v was used all the way into 2010... in either case you should be fine with the 08

correct, vans for sure, but what I was trying to say was in 09 was when the 3v 4.6 was intro'd to trucks...what we should say is as long as he gets a 2v hes good lol

If I were you I wouldn't even change the cams. I have an 07 f150 4.6 in a 98 mustang running 7.8 with a 150 shot. Also I have a 08 f150 4.6 in a 99 running 7.19 with a kenny bell on it. No changes to either motor except for the left cam gear because the 08 and 07 trucks had veritable timing and the gear has eight pointers on it and it only needs one. The 04 should be good with one pointer. Good luck and have fun.

OH! Another thing you will need to change the pan and pickup tube and put the one for a mustang on it. Also you may need to change the oil filter and lower radiator hose adapter. Check it and see if it is the same. If not change it.

how good is this good deal? you may find just as good of a deal on a PI grand marquis/crown vic/town car and save some labor since the only difference in that engine and yours is the pan...

i got a complete 05 f150 truck motor with 85k miles for 1100 shipped. i saw some crownvic motors that were cheaper but most were fleet vehicle motors with a lot of miles. plus i figured the f150 probably has better cams.

i just hope it will last till spring. its going to have an s-trim on it and only be driven a few times a month to the track. lol. so it will give me time to build the one i am pulling out and i already have most of the parts.

do you think that i can still use the vortech chip with the f150 motor? i know tuning will yield more power but i don't really care about squeezing all the power out. i just want it to run well for now.

I don't see where you would run into a problem as long as you use the same injectors and good spark plugs. I don't know if you have used this s-trim before but be sure and check your fuel air. That is the most important part. Also keep it under 6 grand because that is all those cams are good for.
