  • Fox T5....rebuild or buy another one

I have a vert that needs a tranny. the T5 is in bad shape and my wife is going to need to drive it for a month or so. I need to get it more drivable. I know the shift forks are done but I think theres more to it.

should i buy a used one on here just to get me by or try to get it rebuilt? I'm trying not to spend any more money then I have to on this.

Wouldn't it be about the same price? (not talking brand new).

Though I have had great luck on buying parts from members, I can definitely see an "Oh, shit!" moment after stabbing in a used T-5, and finding out it was more "used" than the one you replaced it with. I guess if you really trust someone's word, it's fine. Otherwise, I'd pull it and let Slim put a rebuild kit in it, and not worry about it.

I'm not sure, I found an ad for standard transmission for $150 plus parts, just not sure if they will charge me for whats actually needed or gouge me.

I can find a used tranny out of a wrecked car in the 200 range but you never know if its actually any good. Unfortunately people aren't so honest nowadays. I would prefer to just buy a used one but I hate to buy one not knowing if it works until I stab it then taking the chance of being out the cash.

Bro... your wife is going to be driving it. Trade it in to someone like Slim for one that has a fresh rebuild or just have him rebuild it.

No shit. Having her get stuck somewhere and getting "that" phone call, isn't worth it.

Its just for a week or so not long term. We are selling her car and haven't bought the new one yet. just want to have a transition car so we won't be rushed to buy a new one. After all this she may not even drive it, just want to be safe.

I plan on getting a tremec so don't want to blow much money on a T5 when I'll be pulling it anyways

This^^^ even if its only temporary, you will still have a good tranny to sell to finance the Tremec when its all said and done.

Buying a used T5 is always a risk. How many T5's do you think are floating around that have not been abused? Most of the good ones are still in the car.

About 9 years ago, the AOD in my 'vert took a dump, and I did a 5 speed swap using all used stuff (except the clutch). I bought it all from a guy on this board who was doing a C4 swap in a coupe. It was cheap enough that I took a chance. Everything was in good shape, but I considered myself lucky.
