  • starter/bellhousing/flexplate issues.

I know there are 164 tooth and 157 tooth flexplates and bellhousings to match but does the starter care which flexplate its matching up to? I've got a C6 bellhousing in the car with a JW 164 tooth flexplate and it would appear that my starter is engaging and spinning but not hitting the flexplate.

I dont know if I need to get a starter that goes to the C6 bellhousing or a larger flexplate(if they even make one).

Flexplate is 157 tooth. Looks like this bell housing might need 164 is its a bigger diameter plate.

Is it a new starter? I purchased a rebuilt starter a few weeks ago and the bendix wasnt working. Try to crank it and it would spin but not engage the flywheel. Could just be a bad starter.

nah I crawled under it and looked, its about a half inch or more away from engaging the flexplate.

From what I understand, the starter doesnt care, it is the bell and fly that makes the difference.

So you crawled under it while it was being cranked and the bendix was kicking out, but not enough to engage the flywheel?

yes, and i stuck my finger inbetween the flexplate and the starter gear to get an accurate measurement. It tried to suck my finger in a few times but the finger was small enough to slide right through without any major trauma.

LOL im just fucking around with ya. I didnt do it with the gear engaged but i can tell it was clearly a half inch or more. My car doesnt have a whole transmission, its just the shell of a C6 so that I could work on my motor while getting the money together to get my power glide out of the shop(which should be this month!)

I know you've already figured it out but,You can usually tell pretty quick if you compare the flex plate diameter to the belhousing - the correct mating pieces have very little clearance between the flexplate teeth and the belhousing... and in your case, the teeth are probably about as far from the belhousing as the starter.
