  • 1997 Cobra - First gear making hideous noise - Intermittent

Was driving our Cobra and noticed that 25% of the time I start out in first it starts making a real crazy sound, not like a grind but like a skretching sound, doesn't do it in any other gear and doesn't do it every time. Any ideas?

Throw Out Bearing getting ready to let loose...

Only in first? At least it is a cheap fix (sans the PITA of labor)

Usually most pronounced/noticeable in 1st gear.

Out, never does it right when the clutch is out, I'll let the clutch out and start moving then it starts and if I dont put the clutch back in it'll make the noise for a thousand rpms or so then it'll go away, but like I said, it only does this like 1 out of 4 or 5 times.

Ya, it is a strange noise, almost like the noise a transmission makes when it is being wrapped out in reverse if that makes sense, except a little more destructive sounding.

Might sound stupid, but did you check the fluid level.

Haven't had any time yet, the car just sits in the garage 99% of the time so I'll throw on jacks and take a look when I get a minute. Would be a nice easy fix!

The Trans doesn't cosume any fluid. If it's low, then you should have a visible puddle under the car since it sits in the garage. If no puddle, then it shouldn't be a fluid issue.

Good point, this seemed to start suddenly as well. As a matter of fact it might have started doing this after I bogged it real hard on accident (rolled off from a light in 4th from like 5mph).

I bet it's one of 3 things - either the T/O bearing, low fluid or the front bearing is loose under the bearing retainer.

If you do take it apart for any reason, make sure the retainer is free of wear rings.

I'll check the fluid first, if that is not it I'll go ahead and pull it out. Just out of curiosity, whats a decent rebuild go for?
