  • 351C4V head questions

    Can I slap these on a 5.0 or does it have to be an older 302 block? I understand there are differences in the boss block vs the standard 302 block (four bolt mains etc.) I also understand that it will have to have a set of pistons that work with the heads.

    Secondly how many rpm can I turn a stock 302 rotating assembly before mass destruction?

    I want a high rpm solid cam beast to play around with. Something like the trans-am boss 302 or the z-28 302.

    You will also have to plug some of the cooling ports on the head surface and drill and tap a hole in the front so you can route coolant to the radiator . I would balance it and use a good balancer and a guirdle . Do you already have the heads ?

          No heads yet. Im talking with a guy on craigslist that has a bare set for 150

            What year and series . I have a complete 4v motor and have been kicking around the cleavor idea myself .

              It takes some modification to the block to accept those heads correctly. Look it up on google. There is tons of info regarding this swap..

                  Close chamber 4v's are the best 70-73 . 2v's are the most common and not realy worth the cost to do the swap . Mine are 4v open chambers so not as great but you can always use a popup piston to get the compression . There are aluminum Cleavland heads avalible also that have the best of both styles like the Aussy heads . Close chamber , raised exhaust ports that are smaller for beter velocity , ect .

                    I think it takes a special intake manifold to match the Cleveland heads to the Windsor block. I bet there is an aftermarket intake available. I bet it is pricey.

                      yes it does. they use to be out of production but you might be able to find one floating around on ebay or the corral. Not a lot of options.

                        I have a complete Cleveland short block that I'd be willing to get rid of cheap if your interested. It's .030 over and could use a clean up hone from some light surface rust. It's not assembled but it should be a good start for a little street build if you interested.


                        If your set on doing a clevor set up use the 351 as a base. Those big 4V ports love the cubes. CHI in Australia makes intakes for whatever you wanna do and they have kits for the water passages and thermostat. If using a 302 block you can find a boss 302 intake pretty easily

                          Those heads have ports almost big enough to live in. I agree that it would take big cubes or high RPM to really take advantage of the extra flow.

                            I just got my new 5.0 and Super Ford magazine, and there is a story on building a 408 stroker motor with after market Cleveland heads. They refer to an older magazine that has an article on building a "Clevor" as they call it motor. Pretty good read.

                              I think I need to start working on the Cleveland style headed Windsor I have sitting next to my 69 Fastback. :wink1:

                              Google Aussie heads. There is a company out of Seattle importing them from Australia. Really cheap too. And what's better is that you can get a closed chamber 2V version. Best of both worlds. The 4V heads are cool and all but don't wake up until about 4500 rpm.
