it ran bad because you RETARDED the timing. 36- to - 20 is retarded not advanced. and 20 is nowhere near enough timing. I wouldnt run 20* unless it had alot of boost or nitrous

Back in high school, a buddy of mine bought a Chevy 350 motor that was rebuilt by someone. He had a issue with the car NOT idling below 2000 RPMs. Ended up the previous owner put in a cam too large for the motor, for what he wanted to do with it.

I believe you may have a camshaft too large for the what you want in the motor.

I believe he is saying he moved it from 36 to 20 degrees initial timing, not total. And the dizzy isn't locked out as far as i know. I agree with the cam being too large for what tanner is looking for.

This. It was initial timing 36 to 20. Ran like more crap, went back to 36 where it was "drivable" and waited till I had a chance to tear into it and see the cam. We are taking the cam out tonight... I'm scared! Big unwelcome surprise awaits I think!

sounds like the dist is locked or hooked to the wrong vac port (if it has a vac adv)

Gear drives are as good for as fast as you wanna spin 'em. I've NEVER heard of a gear drive coming apart, but I have heard of countless chains stretching or breaking.
