  • ? about air press. sensing tires

How do these things work? Is there something inside the tire that senses tire press.? Reason I ask is because my wife's '10 Volvo had a tire go completely flat while sitting at wrk. Volvo roadside assistance is going over to install spare. Can I take the tire to get repaired at any corner tire shop or does it need to be repaired at Volvo. I don't know what the damage is to the tire at this point.

Cars with TPMS have pressure monitors either attached to the rim inside the tire or on the valve stem. Any tire place should be able to do it.

At least make sure they have a modern tire machine. The old shoe type are notorious for busting sensors and some cars that can be a 300-400.00 mistake.

Not sure about Volvo. Ford's sensors are on a band around the rim and GM's are attached to the valve stem.

If google is right, it looks like Volvo's are attached to the valve stem.

The only thing with discount, regarding your tpms, they try to push a "rebuild" kit. They push it as being necessary, when really its not unless you have a problem with it.

                  Wait a minute......

.....you mean to tell me that the TPMS sys has to be replaced?

When I had new tires put on, we just pulled the sensor off the old valve stem and attached it to the the new stem.

Unless it's a battery or something like that - I'm not sure what the kit would include.

When you get a rebuild kit, you get a rubber grommet to seal the wheel/valve. You get a new valve core (which will corrode in time btw) and a new clamping nut and washer. If the nut/core does corrode then you will more than likely need a new sensor which are roughly around $80ea.

That's basically everything that came with the new valve stems. To me it wasn't a rebuild kit, it was just a new valve stem made for TPMS use. I guess for Discount Tire it is a marketing thing.

Had the new tires mounted and installed yesterday. Discount charged $7.99 per rebuild kit. I was telltale surprised it was that cheap, anytime I hear "rebuild," I get nervous.
