  • Honda eggspurts inside (96 accord)

Yes I know this is a mustang site but I know there are guys here that work on Hondas.

Might be buying this car from a family member. 4 door auto, 2.2vtec, 140k miles (it was his grandma's car so barely got driven the first 8 years).

    The good:
    1. Motor and Trans seem fine
    2. AC Blows cold
    3. Has new tires

    The bad:
    1. I think it has a bad passenger front wheel bearing. There is a "hum/buzz" from the wheel that is speed dependent. It also seems to get louder when there is more load on that corner and quiter with less load (how much for a new bearing?)
    2. Has an exaust leak somwhere in the midpipe under the car...shouldnt be too bad to fix.
    3. Has a check engine light. Need to ODBII scan now that I know the plug is behind the ashtray. Maybe realted to the exause leak under the car.
    4. Speedo bounces at first but then stableizes. I assume these have a mechanical speedo cable, or is that something wrong with the cluster?
    5. Not sure if the timing belt has been changed. Is the timing belt the same on the vtec as the standard 2.2?

    Any help would be appreciated.

hubs/bearings arent too hard. Speedo is most likely a vss and can cause slight erratic shifting on autos, exhaust leaks are easy, and see what the code is to get a definition. Check the prce of the vss, they are slightly high sometimes

Get the codes read, if the exhaust leak is after the rear o2 it won't set the check engine light but my money is on the VSS causing the CEL . VSS are around 50-100 bucks.

Timing belts are different on vtec vs non. (info from gates) Procedure is identical tho. Another plus...it has a balance shaft belt and a timing belt driven water pump, so change that out also. And if thats not enough....it is a interference motor, so don't fuck it up,Lol. Pretty easy tho ive done a bunch of them.

        Great little cars IMO!

mine is also a 96 with 214,000 miles and love it, only had to replace EGR valve, Cv axles, front wheel hub bearing, and sway bars bushings over the last 10 years(120,000miles)i'm having to do timing/balancer belt and water pump ASAP.
