  • Need some Cummins info.

F.I.L. just bought a 2006 Ram 2500 4wd and wants me to do a pm on it. I'll be changing all the filters and looking over the suspension, steering, brakes, etc. Anything noteworthy I should be looking for?
I've got to go to Longview to do this so I want to make sure I've got all the proper tools with me, mainly for filter changing. Anything special I should know about replacing the oil and fuel filter? Priming for the fuel system?

Fuel filter requires a half inch drive, and it sits a bowl so you won't have to prime it.

Need to make sure you lube the driveshaft slip yoke. Depending on the mileage it might be time for a band or valve adjustment. I'd also check the u-joints in the front that go to the hubs, a common failure point on those trucks if you actually use the 4wd.

The used oil can cure some forms of cancer. It's not LSx grade, but still magical.

If he is going to do his own oil changes later, Id look into a Fumoto oil drain valve. Its $25

Like said above, the fuel filter canister lid is 1/2 drive but I would use a socket, not a drive socket. Its 1 1/8" socket I believe and I use a 6pt and not a 12pt. If it has never been changed, the SOB is way overtightened from the factory. Some people break the lids

Cool, thanks for the info. I've got an 1 1/8", so I'll just use it. It's got 75k on it, so I would hope the fuel filter has been changed.

Cummins fleetguard filters only. I use an adjustable wrench for the fuel filter. I never lubed the front driveshaft on my mega cab in 150k miles

I would do is pull the front rotors, pull the ABS sensors, and pack the front bearings with grease

Use the premium fleetguard fuel filters (7micron?) IIRC is the lowest you can get from cummins, I actually have a few left over at the house, and some oil filters, make you a hell of a deal on

1 1/8" socket on the fuel filter lid, its a bitch to get loose if some other grease monkey went to town on it before you, after that its no problem.

3894s for the oil filters, and ive always ran Rosmelllaaa 15w40

Really just keep the filters changed, check the trans fluid make sure its decent and doesnt smell burnt. If you get the 1-2-1-2-1-2 shuttle shift under light load thats an easy fix too.(more annoying than harmful)

                  You get rid of yours?

Man, no love for the Wix filters in here? Their fuel filter is also a 7 micron. I can get a MUCH better deal on those than Fleetgaurd. As for oil, he wants synthetic so I'll bring some Amsoil with me.

Yes sir, been a long time but back in a gasser, rollin a 08 Silverado crew now, hadnt been without a diesel in over 6 years, kinda weird

Wix is actually decent, as long as they are a true 7 micron they should be just fine. Probably sounds anal but I also use to flip the water separator open every few tanks too, just to make sure no water in the system(should hardly be any in the summer)

I know some people swear by Amsoil, but I just cant justify the price, maybe im just a cheapass but Rotella and Fleetguard 3894s never let me down

Pooter without a diesel, crazy. Amsoil isn't exactly cheap, but being a dealer helps.
