A quality gun will go a long way to helping your metalics lay down even. My metalic gun runs about $600. Good guns arn't cheap and likely not worth it if you are doing just one car. I use an Iwata lph400 1.3 with the purple cap. It works great with flakes. For the candy I use lph400 1.4 with silver cap or ls400 1.4 you can stripe it with the candy really quick if your gun has an uneven pattern.
Thats just a little to think about. You also have to worry about trash, temp, ventilation, are you going to seal it, speed of product(dry time), speed and distance of gun from panel, clear gun, etc...
What color and are you sure your body work is spot on?
