  • Speedometer gear troubles.

Got a 23 tooth driven gear from Dallas mustang, put it in and there was no movement in the speedometer, took it apart to find my new gear broken where the clip holds it on and the yellow drive gear no where to be seen, with yellow shreads of plastic visable.

Great, my simple job just took the most pain in the ass route.

I checked ford racings chart and for 3.73s it says 21 tooth driven with a 7 tooth drive.

If that is the case why did DM sell me a 23 tooth?

I know certain teeth do not mesh with drive gears, and shread them, is the 23 one of them?

And since I have to replace it all now, would the kit from latemodel (7 tooth drive 21 tooth driven) work just fine? Or is there something wrong with thier information?

I had a 21 tooth (red) in my car before and it was reading almost 10 mph to fast.

Have you read your other thread? It explains what you need.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, if Dallas Mustang sold you a white 23 tooth, you probably asked for it. Did you tell them you wanted one for a 91? Or did you know which drive gear you have?

If it broke, it may have been an alignment problem from your install. The wear from using a incorrect gear will only wear it down.

Check with the dealer before you buy anymore gears, that have always been cheaper from Ford.

Now when you say your speedo is off 10mph, at what speed? Drive/driven gear issues will cause the speedo to be off a percentage.

23 tooth will get it close.

Well asking for parts for a 91 will get me the wrong part. Because my drive gear is yellow, not black. Because my car was born an automatic, converted to 5spd.

I told them it was for a trans with yellow gear, and even asked If it would chew up, was told no.

Im not pointing fingers, I just Want my speedometer to work correcty, and I get different answers from everyone.

Someone says 21 tooth, then another says 23.

Now I get to start from scratch.

Did the math, I need a 21 tooth with a 7 tooth. For 3.73s. I even double checked my diff to make sure they were 3.73s.

Did you tell them you wanted a 21 tooth red?

If you have 3.73's, get a yellow 7 tooth drive gear and a red 21 tooth driven gear for a T5 and you will be set.

If your speedo is more than a few percent off after that, check your tire size.
