  • Goop or gasket?

I am changing the differential fluid in my 94 GT. Finally. So anyway, should I go to autozone and get one of those fel-pro gaskets? Or should I just use that RTV gasket maker goop? I'd heard from a couple people that you want to use the goop, and just skip the storebought gasket. They said that they tend to fail, and just making your own gasket out of the goop tends to work better. Is there any truth to this? Keep in mind I'm just a humble shade tree mechanic so I don't now stuff like this.

The gaskets always leak. Just use silicone.

Sweet thanks. Just that typical black RTV "Gasket maker" stuff right? It doesn't have to be anything real damn specific?

Thanks everyone for the help. Got 'er knocked out. The stuff says that it dries in an hour, but doesn't fully cure until 24 hours. Think I'll wait till it fully cures till I add the new fluids.

you don't have to wait 24 hrs. I would fill mine back up after I was finished puting everything back togather.

Right. Certainly after an hour you'd be fine. I've never given it much thought and refilled diff's immediately.

Goop and fill, never wait for a come-back.

This is true...I also prefer the ford diesel silicone that stuff is the shit hell I've used it to seal cheap header gaskets (not because I wanted to) but ultra grey or mega grey as long as its grey.
