So we all know that the Explorer/Cobra/GT-40 intakes are pretty much the same for the 5.0 motors. What I'm wondering is, are they even worth it? Versus something like your typical trick flow or edelbrock intake. Seems like compared to them, the explorer intake just wouldn't be up to par. Or is it? I see so many people seeking after that intake for their 5.0. Wouldn't it be better to just save for a little bit longer, and buy the good intake? Such as the trick flow or something similar...

They're actually a good, torquey intake for a mild bolt-on application. I like the Cobra-style intake because there is room to do a little porting on it. I'm currently running one on my 331 with ported TFS heads and TFS Stage II cam. The Cobra/GT40 should be good for low 400's. If You shoot for bigger numbers, you're going to have to consider other options.

Stanley, you're missing the fact that different intakes are better for different combinations.
If you are building a stockish 302 with stockish (or something like AFR 165s) heads, and the car is 90% daily driver, the Exploder/Cobra intakes are "the better intake". And very cheap.
If you're building a hot 302 with a cam designed to make it's power 3000-6500 and "big" heads, you need something like a Victor Jr.
It all depends on the intended application.
And I have to admit this explanation is too shallow.

i was always under the impression that the Tubular Gt40 intake was the better out of the 3 out of the box, when it comes to porting the Cobra has more meat on it, so you can open it up more like Denny said.
If you're going to go big, might as well get a systemax.

I've got one, but it's too much for my little combo.
