Out of nowhere I get a CEL light on my 96 bmw 328is, ran the code and it came back P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Malfunction.
Car still seems to drive fine, although it seems like the acceleration is not as linear (kinda seems to be a little sluggish off the line then starts to rapidly accelerate, possibly accelerating more quickly then previously at the same throttle input).
In an odd twist right before the check engine light came on for the P0340 the car developed a slight hum through the speakers that seems RPM/throttle input dependent. Might just be a conicidence, but seems strange since it has never made this sound previously. When I first heard that sound I thought maybe the alternator is on it's way out, and now I have this mystery CPS sensor throwing a check engine light. Any possiblity the fault code could be an alternator just going on the fritz causing strange readings through sensors? I put the car in diagnostic mode and the volt readings seemed okay, at idle I was getting about 12.5v and on the gas around 14v. Lowest I saw was a dip right around 12v w/ac on full at idle. This is the car that shat it's waterpump last week and soaked all the front accessories so it's not hard to believe that the alternator could have sustained some damage.
You guys think it is probably the CPS sensor or would you pull the alternator first?
Thanks in advance!
