  • 1994 mustang gt ignition issues.

My 94 has issues with the tach jumping or bouncing. It does it at idle or driving when it jumps a slight jerk is felt. At wot it will detonate. Things ive checked and replaced. New fuel pump, new fuel filter, new coil, new battery, timing at 10', 93 octane. Could it be the mass air or TFI mod. sick of spending money and not getting anyplace. Any idea guys?

Fuel pressure regulator? If not, I'm thinking ignition. Plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor.

But what about the tach jumping? It jumps 500 rpm sometimes.

That's why I mentioned the regulator. If the diaphram is bad, it can allow more fuel to pass through.

It seems more electrical than fuel cause at
low speeds around town and idle its fine. It acts up at highway speeds and floored.

Have you pulled any codes from it?

I've been told (recently) that the ignition in our cars can be a weak spot, including the distributor.

Try replacing the distributor if you have an extra one. The stator, which is the magnetic pickup, in the 94/95 distributors is very susceptible to heat. After a while the signal will go crazy, usually just before the sensor fails. Worst part of the cars. I started up my 95 GT the other day for the first time in a few months and it was doing the same shit with the tach. I am not sure if it is because it has been sitting or whatever but I figure I am going to need a distributor soon. Again (this would be my third). When the stator goes out completely, your TFI module is usually gone soon after and you end up replacing both parts.

Sorry not that same at all the tfi module is external. Its mounted under the mass air meter.

And the reason why they did that is the fox cars had some TFI module failures due to heat. So they moved it onto the fender and mounted it to an aluminum heat sink to do away with that problem. It did nothing for the magnetic pickup though. What a bunch of bullshit!

That's what I was afraid of. Al, do you go to an after-market piece (MSD) or back to cheap stocker?

No way on the MSD if you take a look inside it has Ford stator in it so your just getting a stock distributor all shined up.. oh yea guys thanks again for the advice this sn95 stuff is new to me I'm a diehard fox guy.
