Just be careful doing the springs if you are using pliers. It's possible to poke your eye out if you slip and are yanking towards you.

I would suggest using locking pliers

i like the brake tool i have, but the one dumbycarpi85 has is a different story i was pulling a spring and it let go and hit me right in the mouth/teeth FTW!

You can also install the springs and self adjuster on the shoes before mounting them as a complete assembly onto the backing plate.

side cutters work very well also. They won't cut through the spring, just bite into it enough that the spring won't slip out.
