  • Replacing starter on 2007 F150

That top bolt is a major pain in the ass. That is all.

I did it the route this guy took. Anybody got some different suggestions? Why did they not use a stud and nut for the top?

Articles & How-To's - How-To: Remove 5.4L Starter - Well I recently had my starter hang up and leave me stranded for awhile about an hour away from home. As soon as I got it started I decided it was time to have it rebuilt. So here is my how-to right up as I didn't find any other instructions on it. Items You Will...

After you do it a few times it's not that bad... Hell it's EASY with stock exhaust manifolds. Try doing it with longtubes.

Yep, my problem was the damn swivel would bind up on me every other turn. I have never had a starter take so long. 2 hours total for the job. 30 minutes of that was gethering tools, jacking up vehicle, removing wheel, removing wires and the other two bolts. The rest was that damn top bolt.

              Greenbullitt,

Do the dealerships sell the positive battery terminal by itself? I noticed mine had a crack in it and I want to replace it.

What ever happened to standard battery terminals that run to a distribution block?

Crap, I guess I will have to rig up a battery terminal. The crack is small... do you think using a soldering iron to "weld" it back together would be a smart idea to keep it from spreading.

It was the pretty much the same thing in my 96 Cobra. Top bolt was impossible to get to nearly. I think I ran extensions all the way out the front of the car to get it out.

I know I never put that top bolt back in though. Never ever had a problem running just two bolts in it.

I am already worried about not being able to get it tight enough putting it back in and having it back out cuasing problems...I think I would lose sleep if I left it out all together.

Just tighten the lower two and you shouldn't have any problems.

There is a combination with a short socket and maybe a 7-8" extension with a ratchet that fits in between the starter and the engine mount. I can get my starter off in just a few minutes now.

I've never had a problem getting them on or off. Bit then again I'm not laying on my back either!

Doing it at night with one flashlight did not help either haha. I did say fuck you to it when I had it off and laying on the ground.
