  • What is that little rivet thing in the inner tie rod?

Changing out my inner tie rod so that my front end can be aligned. But what is that little rivet thing that is in the part that you put your wrench on? I think that little rivet thing is going into part of the rack itself and preventing me from being able to get the inner tie rod off of the rack. It doesn't seem like you could just grind the rivet off, cause its facing upwards on my car and then I don't think I'd be able to get what was left out of the hole so that I could turn my wrench and get the inner tie rod off. Any ideas on how to get that little rivet thing all the way out?

Just turn the tie rod off . It will sheer the pin and after you un screw the tie rod all the way off the rest of the pin will just fall out . Your new rod should have a new pin with it . They are a week safety pin basicly and sheer quite easy .

the alignment guy that did mine just sheared the old one off also. seems so unstable but that's how he did it.

Thanks guys I didn't really know what to do about that little pin. I ended up just twisting it until it was facing me then forcing it outa there. I didn't know it was aluminum and I was afraid it might eat the threads.

Ok what about a pitman arm? I mean how do you make sure that your steering wheel isn't going to sit in some jacked up position? See its pretty easy to put the alignment right back where it was when you change the tie rod end. Just put some white out on the inner tie rod, on and near the alignment nut. Guess maybe do the same thing for the pitman arm? If you don't get it right, your steering wheel will be cockeyed when you are driving in a straight line. Do you have any method to make sure the new pitman arm goes on just right?

Guess it doesn't matter. I replaced the pitman arm, lining up the splines on the new one with where the old one sat. The steering wheel now sits in a jacked up position. I made sure not to move anything. I think maybe the moog might be slightly different from the whatever that was on there. Guess I'll have to fix the steering wheel at the steering gear box.
