I'm pulling out the Dana44 in my Jeep and putting in an 8.8, what's a decent cheap locker for off road use? Anyone have some suggestions? Detroit lockers are a little out of my price range unless they are cheaper than I'm seeing. I was looking at an Aussie or something - anyone have one?

Cheap 8.8 Locker?

The cobra diff for the 8.8 is crazy cheap, and pretty tough. It's like $239 new on Latemodel's website. You might see if there's a better deal out there.
EDIT: My bad, dude, that's not a locker. It's just the posi section.Last edited by YALE; 04-30-2011, 03:19 AM.ZOMBIE REAGAN FOR PRESIDENT 2016!!! heh

FUCK THAT.
not that CJ would do it, but i wouldnt build it like that for him either. that setup is known to break and leave you stranded
How do you feel about a spool cj? we could do a mini spool as well (that fits in an open carrier) but detroit would be pimp. The cobra carrier works great, but isnt locked enough imo for an offroad appRing and pinion specialist

Powertrax Lock-Right. Around $300 or less..
Wayne in FW
That's an interesting suggestion, I hadn't seen one of these before, however I think if I'm going to throw down 3 bills, I might as well throw another one down for a used detroit and replace the weak point of an 8.8 - the carrier. Paul have you ever had any experience with these powertrax? I had an early powertrax locker and it was a piece of shit. Lasted two weeks before I got sick of it and took it out. Its not budget, but if I had to build an off-road axle it would have an E-locker. No air lines/tank/compressor and you can go from locked to open with the flip of a switch.

Yeah I pulled it out a few times and changed the springs, took measurements, and everything was spot on. It was ok driving around, but when I would go to tunr in a parking lot or something it would engage/disengage like crazy and shake the entire car. Plus it made a shit load of noise which is considered normal. This was all back in around 1997/98 when they were just hitting the market, but I don't think they are any better.
