  • Whining trans?

My 5 speed in the 94GT seems to whine a bit sometimes. I was thinking about maybe draining all the gear oil, and then filling it back up with the proper amount of that royal purple syncromax (or whatever its called). Think that would help with the whining? Or is the noise indicative of another problem? What is the standard procedure when it comes to maintenance on a manual transmission? I know what it is for auto, but I've never had a manual that needed maintenance.

atf for the fill, but most likely not going to help. its most likely a bearing or gear wear issue. if it doesnt do it in 4th, its countershaft related

I had one years ago that was really low on oil, due to a seal that must have been seeping for years. Went to drain it and it was dryer than a popcorn fart. Not saying that's the case, but it's possible.

Um... but doesn't ATF stand for "Automatic Transmission Fluid"?

What's the way to be 100% certain that my transmission is in fact a T-5? That's borg/warner right? I had heard that there is also another 5 speed that was used in the 90's stangs. Though I have no idea if its true. My last stang was an automatic and I just never had the need to learn the details about the standards. Yeah I'm still ignorant lol. For some reason I always thought that the "T" in T-5 was for Tremec. I want to try to rebuild it myself, if that is what it needs. Be fun.

If its whining, filling it won't help get rid of the noise.

How long do they usually whine for before they need to be rebuilt? Seems like something that could be months, or years. Oh well I've always wanted to know how to rebuild a standard anyway. Guess if it dies I'll get to learn how.

Hopefully my trans doesn't do that. Else I'd be sad.
