  • Broken water pump bolt

So I was taking my water pump off today and broke the head of one of the bolts around the drivers side water jacket. Tried pb blaster and a good pair of vise grips but it didn't move a bit. Any ideas on how to remove this?

I've had success with low grit sandpaper in the jaws of good vise grips, and a piece of pipe to use as a breaker bar. Just wrap the sandpaper around the bolt, clamp down and put the pipe over the handle and pray you don't break it off.

Have you got a Die to put threads on it? If so, theres enough sticking out to thread it up, put two nuts on it and tighten them together and try to back it out. Or, weld a nut to it and try again.

both sound like good ideas, guess I'll try the sandpaper one tomorrow after all the easter stuff. Dont have a die set, might try the welder if the other doesnt work out. I've got a bad feeling about this, like its not gonna come out. I barely had the socket on it when it snapped. It's not like I had some huge breaker bar on it or anything. Thanks for the help guys, fingers crossed...

Grab as close to the block as you can when removing it.

A small hand torch and heat it up will help. Any heat will help.

Try a product called freeze off by CNC.

spray it with PB Blaster or Kroil and hit it with a hammer like it's a big nail...

use vise grips or a pipe wrench and try to tighten it slightly first, then back it off. it might be best to use vise grips so that you can work it back and forth to help push the trash out with the fastener instead if it getting bound up on the trash.

heat helps, but it's so far from the iron block, you're going to have to work it back and forth IMO

This is the best tool ever for that. Mines lasted over 20 years and saved alot of headaches on exhaust studs in heads and water pumps.

You can some like these at Autozone etc

torch and a small pipe wrench with some hammer blows removed the broken bolt if anyone cares.

I figured that's what you would do. Glad you got it out
