  • AOD's, Shift Kits, and Shifting come inside and discuss

I currently have an AOD in the tranny shop getting rebuilt. My builder and I were talking about which shift kit to use. We were looking to use either a Transgo kit our a Baumann Engineering kit.

In the description of the Transgo kit that we are looking at says that it will hold 1-3 to any rpm allowing you to shift it similar to a manual valve body. However you can also put it in drive and let it shift on its own.

We did not have as much info on the Baumann kit so I called them to see what they had to say. The guy confused me more than anything. He basically said their kit will allow you to adjust how hard it shifts and you can raise the full throttle shift points with but it will not allow you to carry it out to any rpm like the Transgo said. In fact where he really go me was saying on an AOD you had to shift from 1st to 2nd then back to 1st in order to carry out 2nd gear. I have never heard of such a thing. Does anyone know this to be true?

So have any of you used any of the above mentioned kits? What did you think about them? Please discuss.

Never used a Baumann Engineering kit, so can't say they are junk or good. I have however used hundreds maybe thousands of Transgo kits. All with good results.

He's right about being able to hold second by doing the 1-D-1 shuffle. I think what the Baumann guy was probably trying to say is that their shift kit is not going to hold 2nd gear forever, no AOD shift kit will if it is a true auto valve body with just a "shift kit". You can get valve bodies that have all the bells and whistles but you're going to pay a premium for it. The real question is how high you want this thing to shift. Transgo is the only one that makes a high-rev governor for the tailshaft of AOD transmissions that will allow more rpm's before it shifts. That's what I used on my AOD along with a custom valve body from Silverfox Performance. I was running a 3000 lock-up converter along with one of his custom valve bodies and the transgo high-rev governor, With that combo the transmission was shifting at 6k on it's own, that's leaving it in D and mashing the pedal. You have to realize these AOD's are hydraulically controlled by fluid pressure, not electronically controlled like the AODE in the 94/95 SN cars and they're harder to fine tune/calibrate.

I have the transgo kit in my vert and installed it myself . I really like the way it works shifting manual or leaving it in drive . You have to change springs and levers in the valve body when you install and also drill and re route some fluid passages but my kit came with a video and was not hard to do . It shifts hard and will hold w/o in od but I do not suggest this . I will eventualy take one of my spares to Mike and have it worked .

I doubt he could have got me the deal I have going with my guy. Its not like my guy is a hack either. He knows his stuff he is just asking me which kit I would like to use. So its a bit of a learning process for me.

Do you still have to go from 1st to 2nd and back down to 1st to hold second after putting the kit in?

I also have the transgo kit in my 92, and I too, installed it myself. Its a great shift kit, it really firms up the shifts. It sounds like a 5 speed when you shift it manually, barking the tires in both 2nd and 3rd. And yes, you have to do the
1-D-1 shuffle, but it will hold whatever gear you are in as long as you want. Also, when you go from 1-D, it shifts NOW! then back to 1 to hold 2nd, then back up to D for 3rd. Its not hard, and with the kit installed, it shifts immediately.

Yep , jst like Rotortrash said but thats because you have 4 gears in the trans and 3 on the shifter . After you do it a while it becomes 2nd nature just like rowing a t-5 . Mine has a 2400 stall and a 351 in front and it yelps like mad on the up shifts .
