Gasser,
The factory cluster worked great. I wanted a tach and didn't want the typical autometer shift light tach screwed to the dash.
I also wanted a wide band and oil pressure/water temp with actual numbers vs low/high.
I have stored the factory cluster and don't plan on hacking the harness under the dash. I am running all new wiring to the new cluster and can hopefully have illumination pics this weekend.

Also, OP. You can still (if you haven't already) recess all those gauges, even the tach, so they look a good bit closer to oem. You'll have to take the gauge itself out of the housing, but I think its worth it. I got rid of the big retarded fuel gauge on my 87 where a tack always should have been, and recessed an autometer ProComp RPM gauge in there.
Only thing that I should have noticed (and you may run into this too) is that the autometer gauges are all built for... well for hot rods I guess. Like built up and finished ones. You'll notice the oil pressure gauge probably used to go to what... 60 psi max? Now its 100, and it always looks like you have very low oil pressure. It sucks, cause mine only reads any oil pressure when the oil is cold. It used to be fine with the old gauge.WH
