He probably pissed off a group of people who knew each other, they got to discussing him, and the way he continues to be himself. People tell him to shut it or he'll end up getting his ass kicked. He thinks they're bluffing (or he's retarded and thinks he can take all of them), keeps his shit up, and receives the beating he asked for.

I'd say the subject of what it was over is probably not the reason, but instead of how he handles himself. The guy is an overall sack of shit that seems to thrive on imagining people are beneath him in order for him to see himself as someone worth the air he breathes.
