Once they have completed their sentences and are released back into the population, after having served their debt, then yes, all rights should be restored.

Got hung up on the K-Rail in the middle. Two officers jumped on the turret cut the lock and then emptied a pistol into the tank. He caught 2 ricochets which killed him.

I disagree. Once you prove you can't follow the rules, you should lose those rights.

I should have stated a disclaimer for the most serious of offenses, but I figured people would use common sense.

                  Obviously I was mistaken.

I've always thought this would be common sense legislation.

that should be used for all the idiots in the government for sure.

The only time one should lose rights is if they are currently in prison. Prison is supposed to be a way to make you pay for crimes and rehabilitate you (at least this is what we are told). If you commit a crime so heinous that we don't want you to have all rights back, you should stay in prison forever. If it is not that heinous, or you have been rehabilitated and are ready to be out in the population, then you should get all rights back; voting, guns, etc, etc. If I can't trust you to own a gun after prison, then you should not have been released, because that means the problem has not been fixed. To me, it is a clear cut black and white situation; either you are ready to have all rights back and be a truly free man because you paid your debt, or you aren't. The current laws are basically saying "I kind of trust you to be out of prison, but I really don't". I am willing to suspend rights until parole is finished, after all, if you still have to take drug tests for the state and prove to a parole officer you are doing good for a year or two, that could still be a condition of parole in the type of rights restoration law I support.

And being a cop and having to deal with repeat offenders all the time, think about this and parole boards if this was the law. They would not release nearly as many people early on parole if they new they would be able to buy a gun soon. People would be serving full sentences, and I am betting sentencing for most of the serious crimes would end up being a lot more severe.

It was a serious question on where you stand, not an attack on you, well maybe a jab. I am with lantirn about the prison thing. Too many rights are already infringed upon and I don't like seeing it continue to be pushed further. It should be cut and dry, by the book.

                            What about non-violent offenses?

You're exactly the kind of guy the gun grabbers like to target, and frankly, you're a bad caricature. Don't pretend you're the man you were. You've made it very clear multiple times you aren't. I'm sorry you're haunted by your combat experience, and I hope time helps heal that wound, but you don't need any guns.
Oh I'm not the person I was. That person was terrified to use what he was taught. I'm not. Don't have access? If you want something bad enough, there is always someone who will provide it. Just because meth is illegal, because grenades are illegal doesn't mean I couldn't find some if I truly desired them.
