For my buddy Frost:
Railroad retirement has several factors that make it far supperior than other forms of retirement. First one being we aren't forced to pay into the broken social security system. That right there is a huge plus. Second is our wives collect a retirement check for half of what ever their husbands get. Even though they never worked for the railroad. This is payment for putting up with the job. So if I get $5,000 a month my wife gets a seperate check mailed to her for $2,500 and combined we are drawing $7500 a month. Also the wives aren't entitled to a penny unless they have been married to us for over 10 years. Even then they can't touch their husband's share if they get divorced. They are only entitled to the wife's share. If the husband remarries they can only get half of the wife's share because they have to share it with the current wife. This is written in law and is a huge safety net agaisnt pissed off ex wifes. Our system is 100% funded by us and our employers. It's not cheap, but in the end it's worth it. Everyone that works for the railroad gets the retirement. Management and Union folks so even the companys enjoy having it. One of my uncles retired 10 years ago and between him and his wife they get $8,000 a month in pension. Social Security sure as hell doesn't pay anyone that much. I'll be set the day I retire. I'll live off my Railraod retirement and won't ever have to touch my 401k, IRA,Mutual Funds or any other investment I have. My kids will be set.
