If NYPD went to the frost method of qualifying every 2 months, and assuming they shoot a 100 rd qualifier with duty ammo (9mm Speer gold dots for this example), you are looking at over 10 million in ammo costs alone for qualifying purposes. 50 bucks for 100 rounds x 6 qualifiers a year x 34,500 officers.

Officers with 5 years of service have a base pay of around 56k, roughly 27 an hour. Assuming each officer gets 1 hour of overtime for their qualifiers, add another 8.3 million to the bill.

Every officer should be held responsible in on their own time, going to the range and running through quals. Faster you qualifiy the faster you are done. Same with MOUNT training. Hey, if these officers are going to wear the badge and the gun, requiring them to actually be proficient with them is part of the job. Kind of like expecting them to work out on their own time to stay in shape.

There is zero excuse, at that range, to fire that many rounds and hit 9 people you WEREN'T aiming at

Yes, you should pay for the ammo to make sure you don't shoot 9 people when you're trying to hit 1 man.

Edit: Or, you could ask that nice police union you belong to that makes sure bad cops aren't fired, to come off of some of their dues that are banked by the leadership, to pay for it. Either way, cops need FAR more training. They're shooting dogs in their own houses, cutting down doors to the wrong address with chainsaws and shooting innocents while trying to hit one, stationary guy. Tell me you don't need more training.

Twice a year and I go shoot two or three times more then that. TCLEOSE says we qualify at 70 percent once a year but my department is higher and we qualify twice. Pistols is 80 and rifle is 90 percent. We are looking at a new shotgun policy and it will be a lot harder course if we get to carry what we want. The LE rounds are also low recoil for shotty and not FMJ on rifles to keep the collateral damage down on shoots. I can tell you this for sure. When the shit hits the fan shootinng a 100 percent at the range doesnt mean anything.

Trust me they try to do everything they can to keep people from getting hurt. What is also sad is that them guys probably told that guy to drop his weapon a couple of times before popping him. We are damned if we do and damned if we dont. Should of been able to blast him in the back but our training has a fine line on what we can do and it makes it very dangerous sometimes.
