The 'P' trap for a tub is actually about 14-16" away from the actual drain on the tub. What ever device you are using to try to clean out the trap has to go down about 3 inches, turn and go back towards the end of the tub about 9-12 inches, then turn down and go a few more inches to reach the 'P' trap itself. It is usually easier to try and go through the overflow as it is a straighter shot to the trap.
