Most people think the company will go down if person X is removed, but it won't.
Even I try to gain as much "tribal" knowledge as possible, but someone would be able to figure it out.
Glad she didn't get canned. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise and she'll find a much better gig.

I have seen a a lot of people mistreated at work, flat out firing people over personal grudges ect. Basically, there's nothing you can do if its not documented or you have someone in management going to bat for you (good luck getting that).
Short version: Fucked.

Seriously.
Don't ever burn bridges with prior employers... It's a small world.
Speaking of, I had a company fax me a "performance evaluation" (kind of what you would see at a chain restaurant for service) for a previous employee at my work, which he signed stating it was OK to fill out. I was under the impression you couldn't divulge to much information when a new employer calls for reference.

They don't give a flying shit about much other then the business side and that's reality. In my case, outages were longer, DoA/COR was pissed and so on. However, when it boiled down to it - the company did the minimum.

"sure I will go get my things but you might want to pull up the files, I haven't done anything in the past two weeks that a check couldn't cover".
In the end the douche bag manager bailed before I got there and I had to pull out some bullshit to open the computer back up and put the file back on it.
Also, if it is the case or not - I don't need to hear about how it is not secure anyway. There is a clear difference between being malicious with it and official duties.

You can pretty much give out ANY information you want about a previous employee. The problem is, that if it is negative and that former employee doesn't get the job and finds out you did it, he can now sue your ass and you'll probably lose. There are a TON of grey areas. You have to be creative.
If someone calls me to ask about someone I fired for stealing I tell them I can give their employments dates and title, but if they need more information I can give them the phone number to my Loss Prevention Auditor.. I have yet to have someone who didn't get the point and asked for the number..

Agree with Talisman. It's a dangerous road to give out more than the following on a former employee:
Date of hire
Last date of employment
Job title when they left.
That's it. If a prospective employer asks for more information, I tell them that it's against our company policy to provide more information than what has been provided. It's clean and limits liability.
All that said, if it was a rock star former employee who left on good terms, it's okay to put in a good word for them informally.
But if you don't have anything good to say, just provide the 3 bits of info referenced above.
OP, glad it "worked out" with you wife. Hope things smooth out at her current employer or that other job works out.Ford
