  • Oh snap, you got da aidz

At least now it looks like they've found a way to keep it from entering new cells.

ScienceDaily (Apr. 2, 2011) — In what could be a potential breakthrough in the battle against AIDS and a major development in the rational design of new drugs, scientists have engineered a new protein that prevents the virus from entering cells. This protein is based on a naturally occurring protein in the body that protects cells from viruses, except the human-made version does not cause inflammation and other side effects at the dosages needed to inhibit AIDS.

This discovery was published in the April 2011 issue of The FASEB Journal.

"This is science fiction made reality. These researchers took a protein apart and removed the portion that causes harm, then stabilized and modified the section that has a therapeutic effect," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "Not only is this good news for people with AIDS, it's good news for all of us as this research paves the way for similar work for many, many other illnesses."

The protein fragment is based on a naturally occurring protein called RANTES, which is part of the body's immune system. RANTES naturally defends the body against HIV/AIDS, but cannot be used as a drug or drug candidate because it has several other biological effects which could cause harmful inflammation. After examining the precise molecular structure of the RANTES protein, the researchers discovered that only a small fragment of the RANTES protein is actually responsible for blocking HIV entry into cells. From there, they dissected the desired section of the RANTES protein and worked to stabilize it without compromising its protective effects.

After several sequential steps of molecular refinement and some virtual modeling, the researchers created a peptide with very high potency against HIV, with possible benefits for treating inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and lupus, as well as the prevention of transplant rejection.

"We're finally able to design smart anti-HIV drugs aimed at the right target. That's because scientists have spent decades figuring out the molecular details of how the virus enters cells, and the exact chemical structures involved," Weissmann added. "As the Renaissance sculptors wrought art from crude marble, today's molecular engineers ... use intelligent design to create life-saving chemical masterpieces."

It sounds good on the surface, but I can't help but think this will just force the virus to get stronger and become resistant to the treatments, just like drug resistant flu, tb, staph, etc. Hooray super aids!

When's the last time you heard someone died from AIDS? Freddy Mercury? Eazy? The shit just ain't a big deal anymore.
How do we forget ourselves? How do we forget our minds?

You make it sound as if they should do nothing.

Note that this wouldn't directly attack the HIV virus. It effectively blocks it from doing any damage.

It is also worth noting that other viruses have not significantly mutated after immunizations were discovered for them. Polio and Small Pox being the most significant.

            heh heh....

But on a serious note, I've been helping folks carry out mission trips to help Zambian orphans. There are a ton of these kids with no family. The main reason for that is that AIDS has all by itself decreased the life expectancy in Zambia to 33 years.

Just imagine, I bet most of the folks on DFWMustangs are 33 or older.

Couple of years ago, life expectancy for people infected with HIV was raised to 25 years. If I remember correctly, it was previously "set" at 10 years.
Science, medicine, and the great human mind have accomplished astounding things. That's why I don't understand the wave of negativity towards child vaccinations. My toddlers are both vaccinated (didn't mean to throw this thread off into another argument ).

Isn't Magic Johnson one of the longest living with HIV so far? Wonder what's going to happen to Tommy Morrison?
I predict this at :50 seconds in...

They have a cure but it's not been tested and only celebs are getting it. If the Government approved it they would lose out on all the money they get from the treatment medications and "research" money they raise. My GF works for a Pharmacutical company and she handles some high profile clients.

I saw an article last year where they cured a guy from AIDS with radiation. The guy had some type of cancer and was receiving radiation treatments(as I recall, some really high doses). The treatment nearly killed him, but after it was all said and done he was AIDS free.

I saw a news story a year or so back from England where a guy was diagnosed with AIDS. Some time later he goes back for a checkup and they can't find any traces of the virus in his body, seemed he was cured. Then he disappeared before they could do testing to figure out what is so different about him.

Lots of stories like this in Africa as well. There are medical teams in Africa tracking down people who were supposedly diagnosed and then cured. Hard to do there though since so many people are hard to trace down by lack of government ID, or address, or job.

The theory is that there is probably some people that have become naturally immune by now, whos bodies have cured themselves and we could use their antibodies to create a cure or vaccine. Just a theory at this point since there has yet to be any conclusive proof come forward.

Found this with a quick search, I think it is a different guy than I read about a few years back.

I generally had some of an idea what I was reading.

Problem is, I'm also not an expert or mildly educated in that field. So the reality is they could be feeding us a complete line of shit and I would not know the difference.

Rather see cancer successes at this point though, so I could start smoking again. I'm a bitter son of a bitch since I quit.
