  • Preparing for the Series 7

I decided to start preparing for the Series 7 exam. I was wondering which of the many learned folks on here have taken it, and if so, how you prepared for the exam. I have all of my finance notes/books from the university, along with old exams. However, I'm convinced this wont be enough to really succeed on the exam.

The content outline on the FINRA site has some basic questions, and I know that most of the study guides out there come with sample tests. If you used a study guide, let me know which one, and what you liked/disliked. I'm very weary of reviews on sites such as Amazon.com.

    TIA

I used Kaplan. Their s7 prep is much stronger than their cfp prep. Your potential employer(s) may have a program of their own however.

      Kaplan's a good source.

Reviewing old tests should be all you really need though. Hit the books, hit some NoDoz, and then hit the test.

You'll pass. No need to overly stress yourself out on it.

I used the books my company provided from STC for all of those licensing tests.
Just read the material once and then hit the practice exams. The CFA has me in the habit of logging study hours, so I know I logged 30 hours for the 7 and I ended up studying too much. Study time will depend on your experience with markets, finance, econ, etc of course. Just saying that it isn't a difficult exam.

Get the practice exams down so that you're passing those and you'll be fine. As sc281 said, put in the study time and you'll pass. Exam questions for the 7 are incredibly basic.

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

I started out with my mom's Boston Institute of Finance books, then took an exam prep weekend class. Going through the exam CD was enough, but I had no questions about whether or not I'd pass about halfway through the prep class.

Fwiw, I'd recommend STC. I looked around and most of the guys on analystforum.com used the STC materials and had good things to say.

I've used them before as well, for the 66 if memory serves me. They have my endorsement as well. I think they had a key concepts binder as well that contained most of the testable info.
