  • Selling a car...

I have a guy in Corpus Christi that wants my truck. I have talked to him and his credit union many of times. The CU wants to send him with two checks... one for the loan payoff made out to nissan Finance and one for me the rest of the sold price.

His plan is to fly in with the checks, we drive to a post office together to make sure the loan check gets mailed out to nissan to release title and we go on our way.

The lady at the CU presented this idea to me first before he did.

Would you trust this and move on?

Nissan does not except wire. The check is a cashiers certified check is from the bank.

A very close friend of mine lost his motorcycle after taking a cashier's check. He went to the bank to deposit the check and it took forever. Next thing he knows, two cops walk in and tell him he's under arrest.

Long story short, he gets a counterfeit check and almost goes to jail while some douche bag rides off into the sun on his sport bike, with the title in hand.

If you take a check, don't release the vehicle until the check is verified, cleared, etc.

That is BS. They will take a wire. They just don't want to deal with having to get it applied to your loan on their end.

Let me clarify on this. They don't want you to send a wire because that would mean it would take an extra step to apply the money to your loan. If you mail the cashiers check, it goes through a Lockbox and gets done with very little hands on work by Nissan.

They should still take the money in my opinion.

I agree this route should work best for you. If you are having a problem with a Nissan representative making this happen get a supervisor involved.

I tried, they do not take wire transfers. It will be a certified loan check from the credit union who I have talked to many times on the phone with and checked them out.

We bought a car doing this same thing from Tennessee. I got the checks from the loan bank, drove up got the car saturday morning, handed them the check, and drove home. They handed me the title at the same time. This guy won't get the title until it is mailed to me and I mail it to him.

Worst case scenario is the check bounces and i report the car stolen. I have gap insurance so it would just be a pain in the ass.
