Although I think the shutdown is needed if that is what it takes to get ourselves back in the black, it does suck. My best friend who is a marine is here with his grandpa that passed away yesterday and isnt sure if he is going to get paid next week. He can put the travel stuff on his credit cards but what they are worried about are utilities, housing, etc.

Even with all that though, he still supports this effort to get the budget under control though.

Back in the lat 80s, maybe early 90s this happened.
Voted to take away the cost of living raise for the troops, but at the same session voted themselves a pay raise.

Meanwhile congress will stay continue to get their paychecks even with the government being shut down. I'm really hoping that the Republicans will come up with an idea to not take a paycheck while the military isn't getting paid! Better yet, they should take that money and send it to military accounts so that they can write checks to personnel even if its a small amount.

Actually, both of you are mistaken. What the OP is discussing is a proposed bill that would reduce the pay for solders starting next year, it has nothing to with the government shut down being discussed in the political forum. I'll see if I can find a link.
