  • To those of you with houses over 3k sq ft

To all the DFWM ballers with 10 year old or newer houses over 3000sq ft. How bad are your electric bills?

The wife and I are starting to get our house ready to sell in the near future (LOL I know) and maybe start looking at something bigger but I cant help but think how bad the electric bills are.

Summer time with the AC full blast the electric bill will run about $1200 for a hot summer in a 2 story 4300 sq ft.

It will vary depending on how well the house is built. Are you looking to build or buy?

Newer houses, comparable size to your current one are going to be more efficient, have more efficient a/c, appliances, etc. And that all translates to lower elec bills. I'm making a huge assumption here but the house you are in currently is 20-25 years old right? I really wouldn't worry about it too much, if the houses you are looking at are 10 years old or less.

I may just have to tell my kids they are going to continue to live like sardines if that is the case!

At this point we dont know. Probably a year or more out before we are ready to buy.

My house is 1800sq ft and is a POS. Everything leaks so the bill is high. I want to move out of the hood and into a nicer, bigger house but I dont want to kill myself paying the electric bill.

                  $1200 / 4 months = $300/month

Was assuming he meant 1200 a month.. 99% of people refer to their electric bills in monthly increments. My bad.

Current house, 3200sqft two story, will average around $200 in peak summer. Aston Woods built in '02
Previous house, 4100sqft two story, averaged around $300 in peak summer. Sotherby Home built in '04.

Both use CoServ Coop for electric.

That makes more sense but I was asking more about monthly bills, not entire summers. I re-read his post and you may be right assuming he is talking about 4 months worth.

No need to assume when he plainly stated exactly what he meant. "$1200 for a hot summer."
