I have always heard not to wear a black suit as well. However, it's better than no suit...who really cares that much.
I typically wear dark grey, black with soft grey stripes, or would wear a navy. Tie is typically a shade of blue. Shirt is white, light blue, or similar.

FWIW, I've been on interviews and hiring panels. I'm fine with mostly anything.
For the levels we were interviewing for, I expected at least a dress shirt tucked in with slacks. Just get shit that fits properly so you dont look messy. I like to rock the suit without tie, way more comfortable and just a bit less formal.
That being said, my boss is a big stickler about suits and it does seem to effect his decision somewhat.www.hppmotorsports.com

Don't wear a black suit on the first interview, but it is appropriate for a final or follow up interview.
Best advice is to always dress 2 levels above what your job's dress code is going to be.
That said, a gig as a salesmen with Verizon would warrant a gray or navy sport coat and a "nice" pair of slacks - tie would be optional for this position. Also, invest in a decent pair of shoes. Cheap, worn out shoes will kill a look in a heart beat.
Good luck (OP).
