I always liked the idea of carpet in the rooms and then wood flooring for the living and high traffic areas. That way dirty shoes/feet or guests spilling something isnt a big deal. Plus the wood has a warm inviting feel and isnt nearly as cold as tile in the winter.
I would do tile in the kitchen because its easier to clean food spills as well as easier to see them. Plus pots and pans that are dropped tend to dent wood flooring.
