  • Shopping for electric rates

Currently with Green Mountain and my contract ran out and I jumped up to 12.2 cents a kwhr. Bills have been unreal so I got on powertochoose.org and saw Amigo Energy has a 12 month contract for 7.9 cents and Pennywise is 8.3 cents with $50 bill credit.

Has anyone had used either of these company's? I read some bad stuff on Amigo but cant find anything on BBB or anywhere about pennywise power. I tried getting Green Mountain to match and they couldnt come close.

Reliant has a 12 month offer for 8.5 cents that I might go with also. I have used them and had no problems with them but just wanted to see if anyone has used or heard anything on pennywise or amigo.

I signed up for Amigo for that same plan. It is supposed to be started this Friday, we'll see how it goes.

I think Im going to call Reliant and see if they will price match Amigo. Im not thrilled about signing a 1 year contract with a company I havent heard of.

You're still protected by the PUC and the electricity is still delivered via Oncor. I wouldn't worry about them. The worst that could happen is they go out of business but in that case you will be automatically switched to the provider of last resort.

I have had some bad providers in the past and I would rather not have to deal with it all. For instance, charging a stupid restoral fee if the bill is even a day late and then cutting it off 2 weeks later because a error between them and encor cause the cancellation on the disconnect order to not go through. I know I could go to the PUC and complain but I would rather avoid it at all costs.

The PUC would just tell me to try to get the company to correct the situation and if they still refuse then you can file a complaint with them. I work in the telecom buisness and have seen many customers go through the process.

I am in the Electricity business and see it from this end, and will say that on residential and small comm customers PUC complaints are a bigger deal.

That said, I see where you are coming from.

i've always wondered about this but for people that produce solar energy themselves and sell it back to the grid how much do they get or does it depend on the providor?

Amigo has been great for me. ZERO problems and my bill dropped damn near in half on average.

I got the 8.5 rate from Reliant, chose them cause I already had them in the past and like their setup and had no complaints. coudl have saved a penny more per kwh, but its was worth the extra $ to go with a known company.

It depends on the company and the product you are signed up for. If you are looking to do something like that then make sure you do alot of research on who you end up with. I know on the commercial side there are only a couple of providers that have products like that.

I will say that the energy you "sell" back will likely not be at the price you pay for eletricity, it will be based on a market price. Also, you will only be "selling" energy back if you are prodicing more than you are consuming on a monthly cycle.

I need to switch. I have Direct Engergy, I have had now for about 3 years. I never renewed by contract so I guess I'm on a month-to-month rate and normally average about 12 cents a kw.
