  • Sometimes I hate ebay

So a guy comes in and bids in the last 5 seconds of my auction and bumps the 70 Mach 1 i was selling to $22,101 and he won the car.

He emails me today asking me to canceling the bid because they found out today that his wife's cancer is more extensive than they thought.

How nicely can I say... Why the hell did you bid last night knowing you might have bad news today?

    That is bullshit.

He just realized he didn't have the money. Ask him how he wants to handle delivery/pickup on your repsonse.

Does that mean your client must pay the eBay fees twice?

I show you listing it as sold on 2/27/2011 for $24,500.00.

            What happened there?

Yeah, ebay is teh suck. The questions I have been getting on mine are freakin rediculous. The most asked one though is "Whats your reserve?". Its none of your fucking buisiness, thats how much it is.

That and the "I will send you a check from Nigeria. Please take down your ad. Im gonna send twice as much and you just send me the change."

And this is why I hate man kind.

The guy never came thru. Ebay refunded us the price of the original listing.

Are you stalking me on ebay?

Don't use reserves. Just start the auction at what your reserve would be. I have never sold a car with a reserve. Always relisted without a reserve the 2nd time and had the car sell for more.

Not quite. You had an ad in the classifieds with a link to eBay.

It just seems with your track record, your clients vehicles aren't moving.

I have sold every vehicle listed except for one. It was a Chevelle that the owner thought was worth 42,000. I told him I would try my best and collected the fees before even listing that one.

This Mach 1 is for my father in law. The vehicle before this was for my wifes boss and I was able to sell it (craigslist) for more than they wanted. I was able to get them a few hundred more than they wanted and that was after my selling fees were taken out.

This is the guys email to me....

Sorry that I did not get to you sooner. It's been a bit crazy around here. I got your email and left you a message about a half hour ago.

I just returned from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. My wife was recently diagnosed with cancer and we just found that it is more extensive than we had hoped.

If you are willing I'd like to ask if you'd be willing to cancel the sale. I will need all of my energy and attention focused on my wife until we are "out of the woods". Perhaps one of the last bidders would be willing to step up.

At the same time I am committed as the high bidder and will not just walk away. I consider my word to be my bond and by bidding I have given you that. If we can't work it out I'll Paypal the deposit and we can figure out the details. If we do move forward I will need to have the car shipped to my home in Maryland. If you have a reliable shipper perhaps I could impose on you to help me get a bid on the transport.

Please give me a call to discuss, this evening if possible. I am going to try to get a little shut eye for the next hour or so. My home number is xxxxxx and I'll be here all evening.

My response that I have not sent yet....

I am very sorry to hear about your wife. I noticed you bid on this car within the last 10 seconds of the auction last night. I don't want to sound rude, and I am very sorry for your wife, but I am sure you knew at that time that she was sick.
                          >
                          > I sold this car for a client and I will have to leave the decision up to him. We will need the 1,000 non-refundable deposit as soon as possible. I will accept paypal for this by sending you an invoice tonight; however, a 3% charge will be added to cover paypal fees. If you would like to go ahead and purchase the vehicle you bid on then I could accept a wire transfer for the entire amount and can forgot the paypal fees. I can get you the wiring instructions tomorrow morning from my bank.
                          >
                          > We do have a shipping company that we have used many times that we can recommend and they usually have great rates compared to other companies we have quoted. I will talk it over with my client and call you this evening.
                          >
                          > Thank you for responding to me and once again I am sorry for you, your wife, and your family. I hope for a speedy recovery for her!

Bottom line, you can not go up there and make him pay. You can do all sorts of eBay stuff to him but nothing that can really hurt the guy. I know when you bid and win something on eBay that it is supposed to be a legally binding contract blah blah blah but what it would take for you to even try to force the money out of him would take more leg work than its worth with no guaranteed pay out. As a seller you have the option to offer a second chance to the guy that was right behind him in bidding just for situations like this so you do not have to go all the way through an auction again. I would jump on that asap.

I just went through a NIGHTMARISH situation VERY similar to yours with an eBay auction for an ATV I was selling for a friend of mine.
