  • Grapevine Train

I have the father in-law here visiting us for a week and was thinking of taking him on the Grapevine train ride to the Stockyards and back. Has anyone ever taken it? was it worth it?

    Thanks

sorry, you will need to ask Freight Train or the appointed union steward about this. We cannot afford to have a grievence filed on us by the union.

    god bless.

Yes, especially if you're into trains and especially the steam engine. I've HEARD they have an diesel-electric they use sometimes but the two times I've used it - it's been the steam engine.

Anyway, I've used it then and would certainly do it again. Actually I did it twice before kids. As soon as my twins are a little older we're doing it again.

It'll also do a little cruise around FW if you want.

I did it several years ago Andre. It was a neat experience, nothing exciting though. If you like trains, its cool. Im kind of a train geek, so I wanted to do it while the steam engine was pulling it. The train goes through some areas that are not real scenic, some of the areas are just not nice at all.

I would recommend the stockyards, even if you don't take the train to get there.

in case you missed the union thread..

We took Jr on it when it was "thomas the train weekend or some shit" some of the "scenery" was the backyard of some sub 40k homes equipt with clothes lines, rotten fences and the overwhelming smell of dog shit that hadnt been picked out of the yard in years it seemed. not to be a downer, Jr loved it, hell i liked it. my gramps retired from southern pacific.

            god bless.

I took the kids a few years ago (just the one that goes from Stockyards to downtown) and we had a great time. I would have done the whole trip, but my daughter didn't have that much of an attention span at the time. I'm sure he would enjoy it.

I did it when I was a teenager and I remember it being pretty damned boring. Just not enough cool scenery on the train ride. Of course the stockyards were fun. It might be worth it just for the experience. I'm not sure if they serve alcohol on there since I was too young to drink it, but if they do, that could make it a LOT better.

Ryan (32V) flipped off a small child whilst waiting on the train in Grapevine once.

So, I'll concur the scenery is not all that. I'd focus on the locomotive, enjoying the smoke and trying to watch it operate.

If you don't like steam locomotives and are there for the scenery - you won't enjoy it.
