  • Is it just me, or is this just GROSS

I have told Lyn's niece several times now, to NOT thaw frozen chicken by putting it in a bowl of hot water. She continues to do so and says she will be fine. Talk about nasty! Chicken already has bad crap in it, let alone letting the hot water warm the outside where the bacteria grow and party like rock stars, while the inside is still nice and frozen.

She does it with anything frozen she cooks. I'll never eat anything she cooks, ever!

Cooking it kills everything that might grow there.

Talk about sweating the small shit. I'd rather it be in clean hot water than sitting out to air dry all day.

Get the center up over 160* and everything is fine, you can thaw it in a warm bucket of piss and it'll be ok to eat.

Once it is cooked it will die (bacteria that is).

Ever heard of setting it in the fridge to thaw out, like planning ahead what you eat?

So when you follow the idiotic advice to stick your frozen turkey or ham or chicken or whatever in a tub of hot water to thaw it, here's what happens. Let's say you're using hot tap water, about 110 degrees or so. The outside surface of the frozen meat will rise to a temperature above 40 degrees fairly quickly, while the inside will stay nice and frosty for quite awhile. In the meantime, any stray salmonella, e coli, campylobacter, or the ever-popular Clostridium botulinum that might be hanging around on the surface of the meat will start to party. Since some bacteria can double in number every twenty minutes at temperatures above 40 degrees, it'll be quite a gathering by the time your meat is thawed. By this time, they will have mutated into heat resistant toxins that cannot be cooked away.

What's wrong with defrosting in the microwave?

<-- not a fan of the warm water theory..

That would drive me insane, too. If it has to be thawed out, I'll put it in the fridge and won't touch it until it's ready.

I like to rub my meat on the ecoli covered shopping carts at the grociery before bringing them home.

This is nothing compared to some of the other stupid things she does, but it's just nasty IMO. Why even take the chance cooking like that for a 6 year old and 18 month old?
